Alabama Community Listening Session with the Black Belt Community

Dallas County Alabama & Black Belt community members came out to have their voices heard. Parents, teachers, youth, elected officials, and others joined RJN staff at the Beloit Community Center for food, fun and dialogue. Orville, Beloit, Selma, and other towns were represented at the Black Belt Community Listening Session.

The event took place at the historic Beloit Community Center, a building nearly 100 years old, that served as a school for African Americans from 1888 to 1923.  It now functions as a multi – purpose, community center and exists as a shining example of progress, self-reliance and community service for generations of past, present and future Alabamians.

The Black Belt Community Listening Session included food, fun, giveaways, and plenty of conversation. Walmart cards, school supplies, shirts, and other gifts were distributed. As the 2025- 2026 school year approaches, community members shared some of their family goals, hopes and dreams for the upcoming year, as well as some of their most challenging household issues, their barriers to success and how they are moving forward.
