Dayton Politicians Must Reject the Status Quo: Community Demands Bold Innovative Action After Tragic Student Death
On April 18 , 2025 RJN! leadership spoke out with community members at a press conference at the Dakota center in Dayton, Ohio to address the response of local leaders, who planned to ban Dayton Public School students from using the downtown bus hub. Co-Founder and Co-Executive Director, Zakiya Sankara-Jabar, along with other community leaders, offered alternatives solutions and called on elected officials to do the same.
“Parents, community members, and taxpayers across Dayton and Montgomery County are calling on city and regional leaders to step up and be bold — to reject the status quo in how we address the crisis facing our children engulfing our neighborhoods. We are demanding more than reactionary, punitive only measures. We are demanding a public health response to this deeply rooted challenge. We condemn current proposals to remove, primarily, Black students from public transportation as this will not solve the problem. Limiting access to education and mobility is not justice — it is more dehumanization and discrimination. Our community deserves better.”
