SOUTH BEND — This year’s NAACP Indiana State Education Summit will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 27 at Indiana University South Bend’s School of Education, 1002 Ester St.

The focus of the event is ending the school-to-prison pipeline and achieving educational justice. Keynote speaker Zakiya Sankara-Jabar, a parent advocate and executive director of Racial Justice Now!, will lead an exploration of school policies that may go unrecognized but contribute to the pipeline.

State Rep. Vernon Smith, D-Gary, will describe the effects of high-stakes testing, and discussion will examine the resegregation of schools, as well as policies that are working well in other districts.

The event is open to the public, who may attend for a $15 fee if registered by Friday, or a $20 fee after Friday. Students pay a $10 fee.
