Racial Justice NOW! DMV Supports Suite of Federal Bills Aimed at Student Wellbeing as Federal Hearing Approaches
On Wednesday, February 16th at 12:15 EST, the House Education and Labor Early Childhood, Elementary and Secondary Education Subcommittee will facilitate a hearing on “Serving All Students: Promoting a Healthier, More Supportive School Environment. Racial Justice NOW! DMV (RJN-DMV) supports all policies, practices and mechanisms that facilitate fostering strong relationships between students, parents and school staff. We know that restorative justice, culturally relevant teaching and curriculum and decriminalizing learning environments are more effective in making a school safe than increased security measures.
We believe that it’s critically important for every level of government to implement the will of the people. Police-Free schools is more than a trend or a catch-phrase, it’s a people-based movement that also requires governmental and institutional agencies to make bold investments and steward appropriate pressures to encourage the implementation of all things necessary to make police-free schools successful.
RJN-DMV looks forward to a robust discussion that matches the broad-based and systemic desires for change as articulated by teachers, students and parents nationwide. Black and Brown youth deserve so much more from our nation’s institutions. We hope that this hearing contributes positively to that discussion.
